A day at the 40 foot

  • Duration: 19:02
  • Location: Sandycove
  • Date/Time: 08.06.2016, 9:30-16:30
  • Equipment: DPA4060 + SD702
  • Weather: Overcast
  • Description: This is a series of edits of recordings made on 8 th June 2016 which have been cross-faded together to form a rolling narrative. I started recording about 9.30am, from a vantage point around the back of the 40 Foot with distant church bells and builders hammers, then some elderly swimmers in for the morning dip, moving through a close up of water bubbling as it rose up and down a corner of the slipway. I left the site late morning and returned at 2.30pm. The whole dynamic had changed - the tide was right in, the water was more animated, and there was a bunch of teenagers diving and mucking about. Meanwhile a dense fog had enshrouded the bay, which enabled me to capture foghorns from a few vantage points, ending up around the front at Sandycove beach, with more kids diving and larking about. I really like the way sound behaves in these spaces; the way it bounces off surrounding buildings, creates tight little echoes, and a sensation of enclosed spaces. The foghorns give it a nice sense of distance and depth to counteract the other sounds.

  • Description: This was a night recording made on a very still March evening in Dalkey. The conditions were just perfect for this kind of soundscape so that you can hear the water lapping all around. I stood at the edge of a piece of land where some water came in my left and right. The omni mics pick this up nicely. Across the bay were seals calling and what I think are sandpipers moving in and out of the scape. The dull hum of traffic is ever present, but to me its particular tone is beautiful and equally adds to this whole present soundscape. This is a special place and it was wonderful to be there for even a short time.   Karen Power April 2015   www.karenpower.ie
