Welcome to A Sound Map Of Dún Laoghaire.
A Sound Map Of Dún Laoghaire is an ongoing collaborative project by artists Anthony Kelly and David Stalling, featuring an online archive of field recordings, lost sounds, and sound histories.
Dún Laoghaire Rathdown has an incredibly rich and diverse sonic environment, which is continuously changing. It changes over the years, throughout the seasons, and it changes with its inhabitants. A Sound Map Of Dún Laoghaire draws from this environment and offers the public easy access to a unique listening experience that is not only enjoyable but also a valuable resource for research and educational purposes.
A Sound Map Of Dún Laoghaire has featured on RTÉ Lyric FM during Bernard Clarke's Blue Of The Night programme, as part of the Full Of Noises festival in Cumbria curated by Helen Frosi, and during the popular Listening Lab series at Blackrock library. Many recordings from the sound map archive are included in the collaborative project 'Folding' with Izumi Kimura and Cora Venus Lunny. Sound artist Sven Anderson produced a pamphlet about the sound map as part of his ongoing initiative The Office For Common Sound. Some of the guest writers, artists and sound recordists who have contributed to the project include Karen Power, Joseph Young, Diane Barker, Phil Maguire, Fergus Kelly, Simone Corr, Katie Donovan, Ian Nyquist, El Putnam, Susanna Caprara and Helen Frosi. New recordings and specially commissioned essays are included in the sound map on a regular basis so make sure to drop by often!
We have been developing the aforementioned Listening Lab as an outreach project featuring themed playlists drawn from A Sound Map of Dún Laoghaire played on high quality speakers for small groups of listeners. Lasting around 45 minutes, these sessions are suitable for listeners of all ages - all that is needed is a curious ear. Please get in touch if you'd like to know more.
Thanks for listening in and we hope that you will enjoy using this site.
